- LETTER: But I've been researching some growing
forums & people are saying that LED's are fine for supplementary
lighting but do not have enough power to grow plants successfully
to budding stage by themselves alone. Another comment was that
the LED's are fine for vegetative growth, but cannot produce
enough light to give the plant sufficient energy to bud up, in
any bulk - that the plants produced are spindly. What do you
say?
-
- REPLY; The simple answer is that they are
NOT using enough LED's. Spindly plants are a classic case of
light starvation, the solution? Easy, use more LED LIGHT!!
- I use 300 Watts of LED and
stopped using my 400 Watt HPS. My power saving is 25% and at
those power levels LED light creates radically fast growth and
stays very cool in my grow tent requiring no ventilation. Growing
is thus greatly simplified, no heat, no odor and not a sound.
The secret is just to use a LOT of LED's. People are just expecting
way to much from a few LED's. In order to get great results using
only LED's you will need an adequate amount of light power.
- 300 Watts of LED power per
10 sqaure feet will give you a very rapid 'Rain Forest Fast'
growth and VERY prolific budding I guaranty it!! If any thing
we get way to much budding. I have counted over 64 buds and a
plant only 8" tall. This happened in light that was on 18
hours and off for 6 hours per day. We never changed the light
cycle and the plants always bud profusely giving us almost 100
flowers in the first 90 days. This is the LED effect but ONLY
if you have enough raw LED power at your disposal!! Also
you need to use 87% red light in order to get this effect. We
always use much more red light these days and at much greater
light densities. I personally would not use any other light source.
I am hooked on LED's!! Be advised you may have to use more LED's
than you have been lead to believe in order to the raise those
certain varieties of plants that really appreciate lots of extra
light. Not all plants are the same, some plants just require
MUCH more light. If these Sun worshiping plant varieties DO get
enough LED light the results will be absolutely hyper-prolific
growth and fruiting like you have never seen before! Save your
money on those expensive fertilizers and put that money into
extra LED's and you will get much better results!!

plant growing lights. The LED lights utilized by LED grow light

The Sun puts off more red and less blue light in the fall so
manipulating plants is VERY easy when you have lights that put
off VERY specific wavelengths! This is perhaps the most important
part of LED growing,,, the fact that YOU are in full control
of the light wavelengths!!! You can force the plant to react
to your needs and you can't do that with ANY other kind of grow
lights!!! Being able to manipulate the red
and blue wavelengths will
give indoor growers a new found control over their corps. In
the case of growing Cilantro
premature "bolting" or flowering is a big problem but
with LED's you can just add some extra blue light and any "bolting"
instantly stops!!! Try that with HID lighting. As LED's drop
in price and increase in power outputs they will eventually dominate
all artificial plant lighting.

- For bulbs the most popular mounting method is a standard
track lighting bar that has standard E27 type sockets.
Lumens
and Lux are
measurements of how bright a light source appears to the human
eye only. With Lumens or Lux you can't accurately compare
the plant growing capability of grow lights! If a grow light manufacturer
rates their grow light output in Lumens then they are only telling
you how bright the grow light will appear to your eyes
and has NOTHING to do with plant growth since plants only use
a tiny percentage of the FULL light spectrum that old fashioned
grow lights emit. In fact Chlorophyll is green for a good reason,
plants use this color as a type of "Sun-block" to remove
95% of the unwanted and damaging light wavelengths. LED Red /
Blue
lighting have such narrow bandwidths that plants without green
Chlorophyll would actually survive and never be damaged by the
LED's perfect and tailor made light wavelengths. Nearly 100% of
the light an LED grow light emits is completely absorbed by the
plant! LED's can also be left on 24 hours and day without stressing
plants since the Chlorophyll does not have to do battle with unwanted
light-waves. Under the COOL GLOW of LED lights
plants will think they are growing in Alaska, the land of the
midnight Sun and plants grow really FAST in an Alaskan summer
season!!!
The most accurate unit of measurement for comparing grow lights
is in microEinstein's, which measures how many photons of light
strike an area per second. While microEinstein's is a much better
way to estimate a lamp's plant growing ability than Lumens or
Lux but it is still not correct to use it for comparing grow lights
because of the tiny band widths of light plants actually absorb.
The irradiance power factor or amount of light that actually gets
used in plant growth or Chlorophyll production
can be factored at a rate of 400µ mol/mª/sec
per every 150 LED's average since they have an extra high
MCD output. Now remember this rating is 95% growth efficient light!!
All other grow lights except LED grow lights emit mainly wasted
light energy that does not help the plant produce Chlorophyll.
In fact 95% is wasted since plants only use very narrow bandwidths
of the total light energy. Rating light output in simple terms
like Lumens or Lux is EXTREMELY misleading
especially when rating a GROW LIGHT which has a very specific
job, like creating Chlorophyll 'a' and 'b'
!!!
- For best results lots of aluminum foil (shinny side up) should
be employed on the walls of the grow boxes.This is a new way
for thinking since HID would get way to hot confined to a reflective
grow box. With LED grow lights dropping in price and getting
more affordable daily we may all have to rethink our growing
techniques to keep up with the times. Cutting your electricity
bill back by up to 95% may be the best reason of all to invest
in a $5.00 roll of aluminum foil.Making reflective grow boxes
may sound like a bit more work BUT not having to worry about
fires, ballast replacement, heat, burned plants, ballast noise,
ventilation, filtration and high electric bills may just make
you think about rearranging the way you grow plants! LED's are

The nature of light The energy produced
by the sun reaches the earth as electromagnetic radiation. Light
and other forms of electromagnetic radiation are considered to
have both a wave nature and a particle nature. Particles or packets
of light (its particle nature) are known as photons - the smallest
divisible units of light. The brightness of light depends on
the number of photons absorbed per unit time. Each photon carries
a fixed amount of energy which determines the amount that the
photon vibrates. The distance moved by a photon during one of
it vibrations is referred to as its wavelength and is measured
in nanometres. specmove Electromagnetic radiation spans a broad
range of wavelengths. At the one end of the spectrum of electromagnetic
radiation there are gamma rays which have a wavelength of 10-5
nm and at the other end, radio waves which have a wavelength
of 1012nm. A very small part of this spectrum can be seen by
the human eye i.e. between the wavelengths 380 and 750 nm. This
part of the electromagnetic spectrum is called visible light.
Almost all life depends ultimately on this part of the spectrum
for its energy. Humans perceive the different wavelengths of
visible light as different colours. Within the spectrum the longer
the wavelength of the radiation, the slower the vibration of
the photons and the less energy each photon contains. Thus photons
of ultraviolet light, at the blue end of the visible spectrum,
have shorter wavelengths and contain more energy than red light
and infrared radiation. Sunlight contains 4% ultraviolet radiation,
52% infrared radiation and 44% visible light. Why is only visible
light used by plants ? Light and photosynthesis. Chlorophyll
does not absorb all the wavelengths of visible light equally.
Chlorophyll a, the most important light-absorbing pigment in
plants, does not absorb light in the green part of the spectrum.
Light in this range of wavelengths is reflected. This is the
reason why chlorophyll is green and also why plants (which contain
a lot of chlorophyll) are also green. Note in the graph above
that the absorption of light by chlorophyll a is at a maximum
at two points on the graph 430 and 662 nm. The rate of photosynthesis
at the different wavelengths of visible light also show two peaks
which roughly correspond to the absorption peaks of chlorophyll
a. Plants do not depend only on chlorophyll a in their light
harvesting machinery but also have other pigments (accessory
pigments) which absorb light of different wavelengths.

Why plants only use
visible light as a source of energy for photosynthesis.
- Plants could use the ultraviolet or infrared
section of the spectrum for photosynthesis but here is why they
don't.

- Ultraviolet light
Each photon of ultraviolet electromagnetic radiation contains
too much radiation for most biological systems. Its high energy
drives electrons from molecules and breaks weak bonds. It is
absorbed by oxygen in the forms O2 and O3 (ozone). The ozone
layer of our atmosphere protects life on the planet from high
levels of ultraviolet radiation.

- Infrared light Each
photon of infrared electromagnetic radiation does not contain
enough energy to do useful work in a biological system. Cells
do absorb this radiation but it contains insufficient energy
to excite electrons of molecules and is thus converted to heat.
Infrared radiation is absorbed by water and by carbon dioxide
in the atmosphere.

Why do HID lights look so bright?
The human eye is very sensitive to light in the yellow and
green regions (500-600 nm). HID lights produce a large amount
of yellow and green light, so they look very bright to the human
eye but all of this blinding glare is very deceptive as your plant
will not use any of this bright 500-600 nm light for growth.
WHY LEDs MAKE BETTER PLANT LIGHTS LEDs vs. HID Plants
do not use all parts of the spectrum equally. This is because
photosynthetic pigments like chlorophyll and carotene absorb light
very strongly at particular wavelengths. Using the right colors
in the proper proportions, nearly any desired spectrum may be
produced with LEDs.
Here is a graph above shows how the spectrum of LED Grow Lights
is very close to that of the absorption spectrum of chlorophyll,
a plant's primary energy collecting pigment. Also, the peak of
the spectrum of our grow lights coincides with the peak of the
photosynthetic response curve. This ability to match spectrums
allows LEDs to produce high growth yields.
- ADVANTAGES OF LED PLANT LIGHTS LEDs vs. HID
Long Life! - The useful life of our 3rd generation LEDs
is 150,000 hours plus burning 24 hours a day! This is called
the 'Alaskan Summer' LED growing method is the best way to grow
with LEDs! During this 24 hour per day "GREENING" or
growing cycle you also add
extra CO2 into the grow room. When you need flowers or fruit
to appear simply cut the light cycle back to only 12 hours per
day. If you prefer growing using only the LED lights on 24/7
and need flowers or buds your can force fruiting using the

- Energy Efficient - Save 95% on your power bills over
HPS / HID lighting. Also consider all of the other reduced power
consumption caused by blowers, filters, air conditioning and
the usual repairs like ballasts, transformers and over heated
bulbs, etc.

- Better for plant growth - Plants can use nearly all
of the light emitted from LED lamps. Wasted energy in metal halide
lamps can be calculated in not only efficient use of the light
wave lengths but also by massive losses of just wasted HEAT energy!
LEDs are just warm to the touch. LED lights produce very little
heat. The temperature of our growing areas is controlled by normal
residential AC/heating and a ceiling fan. In most situations,
no special ventilation or air conditioning is needed.

- Reflective surfaces -
- Use lots of reflective mylar or aluminum foil in your grow
room. Cover every last inch including the floor and ceiling.
Never allow the light to hit a dark area like soil, cover it
too!! Light moves at 187,000,000 miles per second. That means
if you have a dark spot ANYWHERE in your grow room the size of
a 'quarter' it could actually absorb 25% of the light!! Making
sure that every square inch of your grow room is made reflective
should become an obsession! When it comes to reflection there
is no such thing as "GOING TO FAR". When its done right
plants will reward you with explosive growth! It's that important!!
- With HPS or HID you can't use that much reflective foil in
tight quarters due to the heat build up. Having a 100% reflective
grow chamber
is the secret key to creating Explosive Growth with all
'cool-light' emitting growing lamp systems.
Control Over Your Plants - The most important benefit
to LED light is that you have full control over the wave lengths
of Red and Blue
light ! The amounts of red and blue light can be precisely
controlled. Light can be placed exactly where you need it most.
I have placed a Red
LED right against the surface of many plants actually touching
the areas most likely to produce a flower including orchids,
and few days later flower buds started to form! Amazing!!! The
level of growth manipulation and control that LEDs can offer the
grower are only just now being barely explored. We have manipulated
tiny seedlings with excess red light and in just weeks watched
them burst into flowers. We have controlled annuals with excess
Blue light into thinking summer was
never going end and made the last for many years while turning
them into monstrously large plants! LED growing is in its initiatory
period and much more will be learned in the exciting years to
come!
Distance - Just keep the LED's at least 6"
away from the plants for best results. If the LED light gets any
closer than 6" weird stuff can happen. The leaves could start
to grow in curls and spirals and flowering could start very rapidly!!!!!
I have experimented with CLOSE PROXIMITY LED growing and the plants
do really wild things, its kind of fun to see and it does not
hurt the plant! I have had flowers start growing upside down when
growing right up against the LED bulb. The plants love it but
they can grow strangely when very close to the LED's. For best
results 12" to 16" away from the plant is the best.
Also plants can go through LED shock. The light from an LED is
so potent that many plants may possibly not grow for the first
two weeks when you initially put them under the LED light for
the first time. Think of it as over fertilizing a plant,,, to
much of a good thing is not good. To avoid LED shock you can start
by putting the light about 40" away from the plants and moving
it closer ever few days until its about 12" to 16" away.
LED shock is not fatal but the plants undoubtedly think they have
seen the 'LIGHT GOD' and kind of freak out for a little while
if you put the LED's right on top of them all of a sudden.
Plants Stay Cooler- There are two types of plants, those
whose chemistry works better in hot weather, like corn and wheat
and those who like it cooler and more temperate environments,
like the plants you'd choose to grow indoors for instance. Most
cooler growing plants shut down when it gets too hot to avoid
losing more water than they can bring up from their roots. The
LED Grow Light gives your plants all the light they need, without
the heat of conventional grow lights, letting them grow quickly
at room temperature.
Good News for Terrariums and Other Plants Grown "Under
Glass"- Plants with high humidity requirements, like
African Violets, ferns, and many carnivorous plants, are commonly
grown in Terrariums, also called Wardian Cases. Unfortunately,
the combination of high humidity with the heat from most light
sources, either the sun or conventional grow lights, causes a
great deal of condensation on the inner surface of the glass,
obscuring your view of the plants inside. By using LED Grow Lights
to light your Terrariums no heat is added so the glass stays clear
of condensation. Some seedlings with very high humidity requirements
are grown with glass covers over their pots for a period of time.
Getting enough light to these plants is a challenge, but not if
you use an LED light!! The LED Grow Lights emit so little heat
that they can be placed directly on top of the glass or plastic
cover if desired.
Enjoy Delicate Blooms Longer- Flowers are very delicate,
as can be seen from the spotting and edge burning they get outdoors.
Richly colored rose petals fade quickly under the summer sun.
This is not true when flowering plants bloom indoors under the
LED Grow Lights. Miniature roses have been grown with LED Grow
Lights with blooms that were picture perfect and unblemished,
with some varieties having flowers that lasted for six months
without change under blue only LED light. For those of you growing
flowers for perfume oils then you really need LED lights as they
can increase the potency of your flowers oils and resins dramatically!!
An LED light is the only type of light that can be placed within
touching distance of your flowers and not burn them. Emails from
many loyal customers have reported potency increases of over 600%
when the blooming flowers where exposed in ultra-close proximities
of LED light radiation.
